Junior Fair Board plans rummage sale

SIDNEY — The Shelby County Junior Fair Board will host a rummage sale, Aug. 19, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Beige Building on the Shelby County Fairgrounds.

The sale is to raise funds for Junior Fair expenses and improve Junior Fair facilities. Donations of items or time are being asked for by the Junior Fair Board, and a sign-up is available on the OSU extension website.

Donation of items will be accepted through Aug. 18 from 4 to 8 p.m., and suggestions of items include clothes, baby gear, toys, kitchenware, hunting equipment, furniture, antiques household items and electronics.

There will also be an aluminum can drive to benefit the Shelby County Animal Rescue Foundation during the rummage sale. Clubs or individuals who donate enough will earn a spot on the Wall of Fame in the new animal shelter.

4-H Youth Development Educator Cassie Dietrich said this event will be a good way for the newly elected Junior Fair Board members to gain confidence and momentum for the year.

“This will be the first Junior Fair Board-organized event for 14 of our members, who were just elected or appointed at this year’s fair,” she said. “It’s a great way to kick-off their involvement, and the more support they receive, the more confidence they will have going into the 2018 program year.”

Junior Fair Board member Cameron Bowersock, 17, of Anna, said the sale was a good way to interact with the community.

“Running the rummage sale really helps get our name out there to the community, and helps show the community what we can do for them, which is giving back and supporting them,” he said.

Concessions will be available, as well.

Dietrich said that the value in the event goes beyond the funds raised.

“The value in the events we plan goes way beyond dollars and cents. Events like these teach our youth community engagement, event planning, budgeting and money management and customer service,” she said. “I hope people can look beyond the fundraising and see that their support is developing our future leaders.”
