SIDNEY — The Shelby County Relay For Life will kick off its 2017 fundraising year with a social and informational event, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the Connection Point Church of God, 1510 Campbell Road.

People interested in joining or forming teams for the annual relay, which raises money on behalf of the American Cancer Society, will have the opportunity during the kickoff to get answers to questions and general information about the fundraising process.

“The actual meeting will start at 6:30 with several fun items planned,” said 2017 event co-leader Bob Schroerlucke, of Sidney. Between 6 and 6:30 p.m., people can mingle and talk with experienced team leaders.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., relay bingo games will be played for door prizes. A cancer survivor may speak. Cassano’s Pizza has donated pizzas, and other snacks will also be served.

In addition, the 2017 theme and goal will be announced. Each year, teams create booths and activities to match the theme and those then take place during the August relay on the Shelby County Fairgrounds. The relay is an overnight event comprising contests, raffles, bake sales, and team booths selling food, drinks and souvenirs, all while cancer survivors, caregivers, families and friends take turns walking around a track to benefit society-funded research toward a cure for cancer.
