CINCINNATI — Hayden Weiskittel, 15, son of Christa and Scott Weiskittel, of Anna, continues to recover from his heart transplant surgery, which took place April 4 in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

The Anna High School freshman was moved from the intensive care unit to a step-down unit within in the hospital, April 9, a few days ahead of schedule, according to family Facebook posts.

Friends can follow his progress at cotaforhaydenw.com.

By April 8, Hayden could eat solid food, “which made him happy,” the post said. He has also started to walk a little, although unsteadily.

“His voice is much stronger than yesterday and almost back to normal. He is still not allowed to drink thin liquids like water, but he has found that the fruit punch and strawberry milk with the liquid thickener are pretty good. They will probably do another swallow study next week to see if he can swallow liquids without aspirating,” said a post, April 8.

On Tuesday, April 11, Hayden underwent a heart catheterization and biopsy to check for signs that his body might be rejecting the its new heart. Results of those tests had not been posted by press time.

Friends had a fundraising event at the Anna Taco Bell, Saturday, to help the Weiskittels with surgery expenses. Additional events are planned for the future.
