Pumpkins race to victory in New Bremen

NEW BREMEN - Thanks to nice weather and a new and "unique" event, Saturday's annual Pumpkinfest in New Bremen went off without a hitch.

"With the great weather I don't think anyone had a bad time," said Jeff Wells, Chair president for the event.

Attendance for the festival was estimated at about 2,000 people, Wells said.

Highlights of the festival included a "pumpkin" pancake breakfast, a professional pumpkin carver, a "Pumpkin Olympics" for kids and "Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off" as well.

This year also featured "Pumpkin Racing" for the first time ever.

"We try to do something really unique each year," said Wells. "We figured no one else has ever raced a giant pumpkin on a chasse before."

In addition to this year's pumpkin race, the event also featured some of the annual favorites such as the pumpkin weigh-off.

Chip Brunst took home first place in the competition with a pumpkin that weighed 1,272 pounds. Second place went to Quinn Werner, 1264 1/2 pounds, and third place to Dave Stelts, 1138 pounds.

The first place winner of this year's "Pumpkin Pie Bake-Off" was Joan Homan with second going to Bob Bernhold and third to Doris Krieg.

With a variety of different activities for individuals to enjoy, Wells said the most enjoyable part of the weekend's event was seeing festival goer's faces when they saw how large many of the pumpkins were.

"It didn't matter how old or young they are, when someone saw one of the giant pumpkins they always smiled," he said.

"I'm amazed with the size of them myself."
