Pedestrian killed by train

By Tom Barnett
Reporter

Sidney Police are continuing their investigation of the death of a local pedestrian following an incident at the North Street CSX Railroad crossing in Sidney early Thursday morning.

Jason L. Tamplin, 37, of 727 W. North St. in Sidney, was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital of injuries received when he was struck by a northbound freight train.

Tamplin was transported to the Dayton hospital from Wilson Memorial Hospital by CareFlight helicopter after the 1:12 a.m. crossing mishap.

Sidney Police Capt. Rod Austin said Tamplin was accompanied at the crossing by several friends and police will continue to interview witnesses to obtain more information and determine what actually happened.

Austin confirmed the crash site is a gated crossing, but declined to comment on reports the victim had walked around lowered gates - or if gates had somehow malfunctioned.

"We're still waiting on a lot of information," Austin told the Sidney Daily News Thursday morning.

Tamplin was initially transported to Wilson hospital by Sidney paramedics.
