BOE outlines Sidney's future
40 more jobs at risk

By Darrin Michael
Staff writer

A presentation by Sidney Board of Education President Dan Ernst at a work session meeting for the school district Monday evening provided those in attendance with a run down of more than 40 additional staff cuts that will take place if the district's 9.9-mill emergency operating levy fails at the polls at the Nov. 3 election.

Since 2007, the district has reduced it staff by 71 employees including teachers, aides, administrators, bus drivers, cooks and more.

"It's a matter of reality, not of choice," Ernst said regarding the additional cuts that will take place if the levy fails.

"Unfortunately, even if the levy passes, only a few positions will be reinstated," he added.

Like the previous cuts, the additional staffing cuts to be made if the levy fails will affect all levels of employment in the district. In addition to the staffing cuts, the district will also be forced to eliminate all high school advanced placement (AP) classes and participation in Opportunity School if the levy fails.

While all the previous cuts have been difficult, Superintendent Pat O'Donnell said the cuts announced at Monday's meeting probably was the toughest round the board has had to make yet.

"At this point, we've begun cutting the marrow out of the bone," he said. "There is no fat and no muscle left that we can trim."

"It's unfortunate it has come to this point," O'Donnell added. "We're doing everything possible to save this district."

The cuts include:

Certified Departments:

• Sidney High School (SHS) academic teachers - two positions.

• SHS in-school restriction teacher - one position.

• Opportunity School - one position.

• English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher - one position.

• ESL teacher/aide - one position.

• SHS counselor - one position.

• Sidney Middle School (SMS) assistant principal - one position.

• SMS counselor - one position.

• Northwood (NW) counselor - one position.

• Elementary counselors - three positions.

• SMS librarian - one position.

• NW librarian - one position.

• Elementary physical education teachers - three positions.

• Elementary art teachers - two positions.

• Elementary music teachers - three positions.

• Reduce one elementary teacher/building - four positions.

• Academic teacher NW - two positions.

• Academic teacher SMS - three positions.

• Talented and gifted coordinator - one position.

Classified Departments:

• Sidney City Schools' Athletic Director.

• Athletic director's secretary.

• Eliminate all non-IEP students from CLC (24)

• Cooks - four positions.

• Maintenance - two positions.

• Bus drivers - two positions.

• Transportation secretary - one position.

• Custodians - two positions.

In other news, board members acted on a resolution authorizing the district to participate in the Southwestern Ohio Educational Purchasing Council electric service program through December, 2012.

The move will save the district approximately $60,000 a year in electricity.
