COLUMBUS — Two Sidney Daily News staff members have been named finalists in the Ohio APME 2015 newspaper contest.

The awards are made for work published in 2015.

Patricia Ann Speelman has been named a finalist in the best feature writer category. She entered four features for the competition:

• “Cuba: expectations” profiled the work of Minster resident Mary Ann Olding, who had been working on various projects in Cuba for nine years, before President Barack Obama opened relations between the U.S. and the island nation.

• “Snackt ji Platt?” recounted the story area residents who meet monthly to speak Low German to each other, as they work to keep their families’ heritage alive.

• “A Cinderella story comes true” celebrated the efforts of a hospice worker who organized the wedding of a patient and his lady, long-lost lovers, reunited just before he died of cancer.

• “What happens to fair ‘poop’?” documented how exhibitors and officials at the Shelby County Fair manage the mountains of excrement deposited by the hundreds of animals who live on the fairgrounds for the week-long event.

SDN Photographer Luke Gronneberg’s photo, “Rain Drenches Shelby County,” is a finalists in the best news photo category.

Speelman and Gronneberg are each among three finalists nominated for awards in their respective categories.

“I am extremely proud of Patti and Luke’s accomplishments by being named finalists in the AP contest,” said Josh Byers, SDN publisher. “Our entire staff is to be commended for the 100 percent effort they put out every day to make the newspaper the best hometown paper in the region.”

The SDN is in Division II of the competition, which is for newspapers with a daily circulation of 8,000 to 12,999.

The winners will be announced in Columbus in May.
