SIDNEY — At 4:11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2016, firefighters were dispatched to 117 S. Wilkinson St. on a report of a structure fire.

An adult male was the only occupant in the residence at the time of the fire and stated that he was asleep downstairs and awoke to the smell of smoke. He discovered the second floor was on fire, escaped through the front door and called 911.

On arrival, firefighters discovered a two-story, family residence with heavy smoke and fire showing from the second floor. The second floor was heavily involved and starting to extend down the stairs to the first floor. Firefighters were able to perform an interior attack and extinguish the fire quickly. The balance of the crew performed search and rescue, ventilation and checked for fire extension.

A box alarm was dispatched to recall off-duty personnel. Additional mutual aid was provided by Anna Fire Department and Port Jefferson rescue. Dayton Power & Light responded to the scene and secured utilities.

The property is owned by Nova L. West of Troy, Ohio, and sustained heavy fire and smoke damage throughout the structure. Damage is estimated at $40,000 to the structure and contents.

The fire investigation team found the origin of the fire to be in a second floor bedroom. The fire appears to be accidental in nature with the investigation ongoing.
