Autidor warns of dog license scam

SIDNEY — Shelby County Auditor Amy Berning urges dog owners to be cautious when purchasing dog tags online.

“It has come to our attention that there are at least three fraudulent websites now offering Ohio Dog Licenses,” said Berning. “Dog tags are only valid when purchased from your home county. The proceeds fund our animal shelter. Any website that claims to sell tags that are good for the whole state are scams. They are not affiliated with the State, the County, or even the USA. They appear to originate outside of the country, which means they are really after your credit card number. “

Dog tags for year 2020 can be purchased until Jan. 31, 2020, from many physical locations around Shelby County, including the auditor’s office and the animal shelter. To order dog tags online, you can visit the Shelby County Auditor’s website and select “licenses and tags.” This is the legitimate website, and the auditor’s office will mail the dog’s metal tag to the owner shortly after they purchase the license through the site.
