Sidney businesses named best of Dayton region

SIDNEY – Two Sidney businesses – From Above Aerial and JC’s Barber Shop – have been named the best of the region in Dayton.com’s Best of Dayton 2019 competition.

From Above Aerial, owned by Devin Brautigam, won first place in the best local photographer competition.

“There’s an absolute bundle of photographers,” Brautigam said. “There’s a lot of photographers. And this is my first year in business. To be in the game for a year and walk away with the best photographer of Dayton, the whole Dayton area, is absolutely amazing.”

JC’s Barber Shop, owned by Jacob Cornett, won first place in the best barbershop category.

“To know that there’s so many other options in Dayton – Dayton has a ton of options – but to know that Dayton voted for me is overwhelming,” Cornett said. “I’m very appreciative to say the least.”

The Best of Dayton competition featured more than 150 categories with finalists nominated by community members and vetted by Dayton.com staff. During a one month period, more than 1 million votes were cast in the online poll to determine the winners in each category.

“We are so excited to see a nice mix of familiar favorites and new winners and finalists this year,” Michelle Fong, editor of Dayton.com, said. “It is our hope that the Best of Dayton contest helps people in the greater Dayton area discover new restaurants, bars, shopping destinations and entertainment options. This is a great way to celebrate what to love about life in the Dayton area.”

Brautigam credited the residents of Sidney and Shelby County with helping the two Sidney businesses finish atop the voting in their respective categories.

“What we’ve been able to accomplish is absolutely mind blowing,” said Brautigam, who recently was a nominee in the international Fine Arts Photography Awards. “This is definitely a good thing for our community. Our community helped us out in voting.”

Being recognized as the best in the region is great publicity, Cornett said, and another indication he’s achieving his goal of pleasing his customers.

“This is definitely a great review,” he said. “In my shop I strive for great reviews.”

Along with a lot of community support, Cornett said, the cooperation between him and Brautigam was helpful throughout the competition.

“Devin was awesome,” Cornett said. “We kept reaching out to each other throughout this process.”

Dayton.com launched Best of Dayton contest in 2015 in the website’s first year. Previous versions of the people’s choice contest existed on ActiveDayton.com and in the print edition of the Dayton Daily News.

“This year was a record-breaking year for our Best of Dayton contest with more than 1 million votes cast,” Fong said. “That is twice as many votes as last year.”
