Tree Board finalizes Tree City USA luncheon details

SIDNEY — Finalizing plans for the 2020 Tree City USA awards luncheon was discussed during the Feb. 20 Sidney Tree Board meeting.

The Tree City USA Awards Luncheon ceremony, that was to be hosted by the city of Sidney on April 17, 2020, has been postponed until June 19, the city recently announced.

According to Tree Board minutes, it will cost $20 to attend the awards luncheon. The speaker for the event will be Jim Chatfield, associate professor/extension specialist at The Ohio State University Extension departments of horticulture and crop science and of plant pathology. Roger Hendershot, with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, will give small talk on state champion chinquapin oak and seedlings.

The board is planning for 160 to 200 people to attend the event. About 120 invitations were sent out on Feb. 14. Mayor Mike Barhorst is preparing a list of past Tree Board members to also invite to the luncheon. The deadline to register is Friday, April 3.

The Spot will be catering the event which will include the china and linen. There will be two separate buffet lines with a separate drink station. The buffet will include two types of pasta and sauces, with choice of chicken and sausage, fresh fruit and a dinner roll. The silverware, napkins, salad and pies will be preset. The Spot will also provide ushers for assistance.

Red oak seedlings, chocolates from Winans, ISA brochures, city Bicentennial wooden nickels, wooden coasters, Natorp trees, centerpieces, Weigandt gift baskets are giveaways for the event. Mayor Mike Barhorst donated 160, wooden, 4-inch, round coasters for the event. The coasters will have the Tree City USA logo on them. Barhorst also donated the red oak seedlings.

Several other details still being worked on were discussed, including, the entertainment, donations still sought from area businesses, table centerpieces, placemats, vendors, a photographer, the presentation area, parking, setting up and publicizing the event with the Sidney Daily News.

In other business, Chairwoman Ann Asher shared information on 2020 Greater Cincinnati BYGLive! Diagnostic Walk-Abouts provided by Joe Boggs, assistant professor, OSU Extension, Hamilton County, and OSU Department of entomology. The Walk-Abouts are for green industry professionals, such as arborists, landscapers, turf managers, nursery managers, etc. Participants earn ISA certified arborist CEUs. During the event, participants look at plants, plant pests, plant diseases, landscape designs, and other points of interest. Discussions focus on plant problem diagnostics, plant health management, plant selection, and sustainable landscape designs.

The April Tree Board meeting has been cancelled due to health concerns with the COVID-19 epidemic.

The ceremony is rescheduled until June
