WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Historical Society takes to the road for its annual spring bus trip on Thursday, April 28. The destination is Richmond and Wayne County, Indiana.

The adventure will begin with a visit to the Old National Road Welcome Center, where guests will be greeted by a step-on guide, receive a welcome packet highlighting the stops on the visit, and receive a complimentary snack.

The group will then head to a nationally-renowned stop on the Underground Railroad, the Levi Coffin House. Honored as a National Historic Landmark, the Levi Coffin House has also been named one of the 25 most historic sites in the United States by the History Channel.

The lunch stop, the Lakeview Restaurant, will provide home cooking at its best. Tourgoers will watch ducks frolic on the lake while enjoying a meal of traditional comfort food capped off with exceptional desserts.

After lunch the group will be off to the Huddleston Farm and Museum, restored, owned, and operated by Indiana Landmarks as a National Road Heritage Site. Exhibits will offer modern day travelers a vivid picture of cross-country travel on the National Road from Cumberland, Maryland, to Vandalia, Illinois, from the pioneer era to the present.

Tourgoers will then visit historic Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, where all 62 windows were created by Louis Comfort Tiffany.

The day will end with the historical society’s traditional stop for ice cream at Ullery’s Homemade Ice Cream, located in Richmond’s Historic Depot District.

The cost for the trip is $77 for historical society members; $87 for nonmembers. Those who wish to participate should contact the Historical Society at [email protected] or 419-738-9328.
