SIDNEY– People of all ages will gather to help clean up the Great Miami River this weekend.

Clean Sweep of the Great Miami River Watershed from Indian Lake to the Ohio River takes place every year. This year all the locations north of Franklin will be holding their cleanups on July 17 and 18, with the Logan County area holding their’s the 25.

Cleanups for Middletown going south will be held on October 24. All the information to register can be found on greatmiamirivercleanup.org.

These cleanups are volunteer events focused on removing trash and restoring the health of the Great Miami River. But it’s much more than picking up trash, it’s a day for communities to demonstrate their desire for clean water and healthy rivers, according to the website.

It’s an opportunity to learn about the river, and it’s a time to come together to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of the Great Miami River.

The event in Sidney and Shelby County will start at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and go to approximately noon. Volunteers will meet at Custenborder Shelter, 449 Riverside Drive, rain or shine, it will only be cancelled by lightning.

Canoe spots are limited, but walkers are welcomes. Canoes and gloves are provided, along with a free t-shirt and continental breakfast and lunch. Age is restricted to 12 and over and children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or be part of a properly supervised youth group.

Volunteers are asked to fill out the form found on the river cleanup website and email it to Brent Bruggeman at [email protected]. Other questions about the cleanup can be directed to him as well over the phone at 937-498-8724.

The event happening on Saturday from Sidney to Piqua will start at 8 a.m. Saturday and last to approximately 1 p.m. They will assign people to meet at different locations when they sign up.

To volunteer, contact Jeff Lange at 937-214-2906 or visit protectingourwaterways.org.
