County deputies to help at convention

SIDNEY — Shelby County sheriff’s deputies will assist with security in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention in July.

Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart confirmed this week that he has responded to an all-points request that was sent out by the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association (BSSA).

“When those all-points come out, I try to help them, like when a neighbor needs help,” Lenhart said. Shelby County will provide 10 deputies to help cover the convention July 18-21. The salaries and expenses of the 10 will be paid for by the Republican National Committee.

The Cuyahoga County Sheriff has communicated with Lenhart about what he’d like the Shelby County squad to do there.

“I said, ‘We’ll do whatever you want us to do, but I’d prefer to work with other sheriffs’ officers,’” Lenhart said.

The 10 Shelby Countians have not yet been named, however, the group is likely to include school security officers who won’t be in the schools in July. Only those who volunteer will be assigened to the Cleveland detail, according to Lenhart.

“I have to make sure things are covered here,” he said.

Calls to the BSSA for information concerning how many security personnel would be needed for the event were referred first to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department, then to the Cleveland Police Department and then to the Cleveland Mayor’s Office of Communications, which had not responded by press time.
