SIDNEY — The Sidney American Legion Auxiliary sent four high school senior girls to the 70th annual American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls State at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, last month.

Another two girls were named as alternates.

Lehman High School seniors Sidney Chapman, Hannah Fogt, Kaitrin O’Leary and Theresa Schmiesing joined some 900 other young women from across the state for a week-long program designed to educate them in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship.

Sidney High School senior Carly Drury was selected by the local auxiliary to participate, but declined. Alternates were Madison Hussey, of Lehman, and Heather Gold, of Sidney High.

The delegates became citizens of their own states, members of a political party, ran for elected office and dealt with affairs of government at all levels. Chapman served as county commission clerk of Bombeck City; Fogt, as city engineer of Deal City; O’Leary, as city reporter of Allen City; and Schmiesing as book committee of Hobart City.

The program ran from June 12 through June 18.
