July 16, 1891

The improvements of the building to be occupied by the Sidney Broom Factory are in progress. A corrugated iron roof has been placed on one building. The iron roof on the other has been repaired and the interior is receiving a liberal supply of paint and whitewash. It will make a first class factory for the purpose and the firm is well pleased with it.

The reports in various papers that natural gas has failed and all the towns of the line except Sidney are cut off, is a mistake, if not more than that. The main line leaks below Sidney and is in need of repair.

Rev. William Bigot, of Loramie, who recently returned from a trip abroad, has on display a number of articles and pictures acquired on the trip. The exhibit is a fine one and will well repay one to view it.

100 Years

July 16, 1916

More than 500 objectors to the establishment of the Miami Conservancy District and to the appointment of directors of the district, yesterday appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court to have set aside the decision of the court of appeals of Montgomery County which sustained the common pleas court in the establishment of the district. Prosecuting Attorney Mills and P.R. Taylor were in Columbus representing Shelby County objectors.

In the medical examination of the Third regiment several of the commissioned officers of the regiment were turned down by the examiners. They included Lt. Col. W.T. Amos of Sidney, a heart condition and Major Horace Keifer, Springfield, underweight.

75 Years

July 16, 1941

The aluminum drive for national defense in Shelby County will get under way Monday, according to an announcement made today by William B. Trimpe, general chairman of the local committee. A large bin will be set up at one of the entrances to the courthouse, where the aluminum articles may be deposited. Trimpe pointed out that the people of Shelby County are asked to donate all used aluminum ware that can be spared from their homes without being replaced.

Sgt. Lester B. Pepper, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Pepper, is one of the 10 non-commissioned officers selected at Camp Lee, Virginia, to go to Washington today to participate in drawing draft numbers in the second lottery to be held this evening.

50 Years

July 16, 1966

“The opportunity to move up” were the words Jackson Center basketball coach Lowell Foote used in explaining his decision to leave the Shelby County school to take a similar position at Clinton Prairie High School, Clinton County, Indiana. No successor for Foote has yet been named.

“It was a hard decision to make leaving Jackson Center”, commented Foote, “But my new job gives me room for advancement. Indiana is a real basketball state and people over there really love the sport.”

More than half of Shelby County’s record breaking wheat crop of 1966 has been combined elevators estimated today after unusually heavy receipts of the grain arrived over the weekend.

Farmers were in the field Sunday taking advantage of the dry weather and the elevators were open to receive their loads. Price today remained at $1.77 a bushel.

25 Years

July 16, 1991

Ohio governor George Voinovich has made an interesting proposal which might affect the Sidney area. The Governor is proposing state liquor stores be made private enterprises. The Sidney location is one of 75 in the state which are being considered. The legislature has yet to respond to his proposal.

It looks like the runway expansion project at the Sidney Airport might become a reality. The cost estimate of $50,000 contains a condition a grant from the FAA of $45,000 must first be received. The Regional Planning Commission recently approved the project. The FAA will weigh in at some point.
