DAYTON — The Area Agency on Aging has announced a series of six weekly workshops, Healthy U/Diabetes, to begin Sept. 14 and run on Mondays through Oct. 19 at the Senior Center of Sidney/Shelby County, 304 S. West Ave., from9 to 11:30 a.m.

The workshops will help people develop the skills and coping strategies needed to manage their type 2 diabetes.

Healthy U/Diabetes is an interactive, small group workshop that has been proven to improve diabetes management by increasing self-confidence and providing new skills so that participants can better manage their disease and feel healthier. Workshop topics include practical ways to deal with pain, fatigue, and depression; exploring ways to be more physically active; eating healthier and managing diet; improved communication with doctors and family; and finding ways to relax and deal with stress. Participants develop skills and coping strategies to manage their symptoms through action planning, interactive learning, problem-solving, decision-making and social support.

Workshops are open to adults who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or are at risk of developing diabetes and/or their caregivers. There is no charge for participants who are 60 or older; younger participants pay a $15 fee. Everyone who completes the course will receive the companion textbook, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions.”

Advance registration is required by calling 492-5266 or emailing [email protected].
