SIDNEY — Two accidents which occurred moments apart claimed the life of a Sidney man and sent an Osgood mother to the hospital Monday afternoon.

At 4:01 p.m., the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one-vehicle accident with injuries in the 1000 block of Patterson-Halpin Road in Washington Township. Charles W. Lawrence, 55, of Sidney, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Shelby County Coroner’s Office.

According to deputies, Lawrence was traveling northbound on Patterson-Halpin Road, when for an unknown reason, his Dodge Stratus ran off the roadway to the left. The vehicle continued north, striking a tree head-on.

Assisting at the scene was the Lockington Fire Department, Sidney Rescue and the coroner’s office. The accident remains under investigation

A moment earlier, at 4 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of Ohio 66 and Fessler-Buxton Road.

The investigation revealed that a red Ford pickup truck, driven by Corey Mummey, of Houston, was southbound on Ohio 66 and was slowing to make a left turn onto Fessler-Buxton Road. Mummey had to wait for a northbound, black Chevy Malibu driven by Chelsey White, of Osgood, before he could turn onto Fessler-Buxton Road.

As the Ford truck was slowing and waiting to make the turn, a southbound Fed Ex truck, driven by Eric Fitterer, of Dayton, did not slow in time to avoid hitting the Ford truck.

After striking the Mummey’s truck, The Fed Ex truck went left of center and struck the northbound Chevy Malibu. The impact with the Malibu trapped White in the vehicle and required fire personnel from Houston Fire to use the Jaws of Life to cut her from the car. White and her 5-year-old daughter, Zoey A.M. Elliott, Osgood, were transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital, by Houston Rescue. Zoey was transported as a precaution with no apparent injuries.

All three vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene. Support wires going to a pole owned by Pioneer Rural Electric, Piqua, were also damaged in the accident.

Fitterer was cited for assured clear distance.
