Instruction in typewriting has been introduced into the Sidney schools and 40 per cent of the students are learning it.

The Sidney Steel Scraper Co. shipped a consignment of Scrapers to Africa this week.

Loughlin’s School Desk factory will resume operations on Monday after being closed for the past few weeks.

Statistics make it appear that the average cost of food for a family is $244 a year.

100 Years Ago Feb. 4, 1917

There is a rumor going the rounds at Columbus that the Pennsylvania railroad has offered the state of Ohio $25000,000 for the Miami and Erie canal. It is understood that the company wants the right-of-way for railroad purposes. But if the Taylorsville dam is erected and it would be necessary to detour around the dam, it is understood that the railroad would have no use for any part of the right-of-way. A railroad like the Pennsylvania running through Lockington ,Dawson,Newport and Fort Loramie would mean much more to these towns.

75 Years Ago Feb. 4, 1942

The Sidney Board of Education today announced a new schedule to become effective Monday, when the entire nation goes on “war time” as proclaimed by President Roosevelt. Classes will start at 9 a.m.., with closing at 4:08 for the high school and from 3:30 to 3:55 for the grade schools. The problem of children getting on buses in the county during the dark was a major consideration in setting the opening for 9 a.m.

The third selective service registration in Shelby county will be held Feb. 14, 15 and 16 it was announced today. All male residents between the ages of 20 and 45, not previously registered, will be required to register on these dates.

50 Years Ago Feb. 4, 1967

Royal Lawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ardmore Lawson , recently completed training to become a first officer flying with Allegheny Airlines. Lawson is a graduate of Sidney High School and attended the University of Detroit.

Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Cooper, Mr. and Mrs.Stanley Fogt, and Richard Fogt, who operate the 2’n 1Soft Water Service in Anna recently attended a national convention for Chemical Engineering Corp .franchised dealers in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Chemical Engineering makes all types of water treatment equipment. A new line of water conditioners was unveiled during the convention.

25 Years Ago Feb. 4, 1992

PORT JEFFERSON – The leadership of Port Jefferson village government has been restored to what it was before the November election when residents voted in a Mayor who was strongly against the sewer project that leadership proposed. Port Jefferson Village Council emergency meeting for Tuesday night, prompted by the announced resignation of Mayor Edward Weiskittel earlier that day. Council named Steven Butterfield, the former mayor, who was currently serving as council president, to be the new Mayor.

Baumfolder Corp. executives would be willing to negotiate with striking union members but would not be willing to replace the 80 strikers who have been permanently replaced. Twenty spikes were recently found in the parking lot, and 20 tires have been ruined. Also dead animals have been found on the site.
