St. Marys native runs for judge

WAPAKONETA — Another attorney has thrown his hat in the ring to be the next Auglaize County Municipal Court judge.

David Weilbacher, 46, of St. Marys, announced his candidacy for the bench this week. He is a registered Republican.

Weilbacher has been practicing law since 1999 with the last nine years in private practice handling criminal, civil litigation and bankruptcy cases.

Before opening his own practice in Cleveland, Weilbacher was an associate at Bonezzi Switzer Murphy Polito & Hupp practicing general insurance defense including auto and premise liability, nursing home defense, medical malpractice defense and appellate litigation.

He also worked as an in-house attorney for Ohio Casualty Insurance Co. He has worked for two other law firms.

Weilbacher is a graduate of the University of Findlay with majors in political science and criminal justice. He received his law degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1999.

He is a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School where he wrestled from 1985 to 1989 and plans to join the coaching staff this fall. He also wrestled in college and was a three time All-American and a member of the 1995 National Championship team. He wrestled after college competing nationally and internationally in free-style and Greco-Roman wrestling.

In 2014, he won two IBJJF World Championships in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He holds a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Andrew Augsburger, 46, also has filed to run for the position. He also is a Republican.

Both men are seeking to replace Judge Gary Herman who is retiring after 36 years on the bench.
