May 25, 1892

There will be several hundred persons in Sidney who will not attend the 20th annual commencement exercises of the high school this year. There are, in the Monumental opera house, 768 seats of all kinds. Of these, 350 are in the gallery, a place that deserves no occupants. That many hundreds of the more than 5,000 persons in Sidney would be excluded in such a seating capacity is evident.

100 Years

May 25, 1917

The Sidney Electric Co. has filed an application with the State Utilities Commission for permission to issue bonds for the purpose of improving its plant in this city.

The Sidney Sportsman’s Club today received a consignment of 300 English pheasant eggs from the State Fish and Game warden. The eggs will be distributed among farmers for hatching, being placed with those who can be depended upon to care for them.

75 Years

May 25, 1942

Shelby County was one of 24 counties in the state named today as having exceeded their May quotas for the sale of war bonds during the first 15 days of the month. Purchases of bonds for the period totaled $65,985.50.

The registration for residents of Shelby County who wish extra sugar for canning purposes will be held in the basement of the city building on May 27 and 28, it was announced today.

The nation’s war planners today charted a revolutionary program of rigid controls over the day-to-day movements of every person in America as the war effort swept into a new phase of transportation. Rationing of travel by bus, boat, plane and railroad loomed as a possibility, to clear transportation channels for the movement of men, munitions and materials of war.

50 Years

May 25 1967

Bonnie Bensman, Russia High School’s outstanding senior, was recognized as “Teenager of the Month” and awarded a plaque by the Sidney Optimist Club, Tuesday at Johnson’s Banquet House.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bensman, R.R. 1, Russia, Miss Bensman carries a 3.75 grade average and is valedictorian of her graduating class.

Earnie Jones, 1130 Park Street, Tuesday evening received the second scholarship presented by the Longfellow PTA.

Mr. Jones, who will graduate this year from Sidney Senior High School, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilson Jones. Active in sports, he plans to attend Ashland College, Ashland, Ohio, where he will major in teaching physical education.

It was announced today by officers of both organizations that a merger agreement between the Sidney Teen Center and the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA will become effective June 1. It will be known as the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA.

Officers of the new organization will be: Richard Henke, president; Richard Wiford, first vice president; Harley Jones, second vice president; Tom Schlagetter, secretary; and Lee Cartwright, treasurer.

WASHINGTON – More than 14 million American workers hold low-paying jobs, nearly double the number of a decade ago, the Census Bureau says.

The bureau’s study, released Monday, showed low-wage jobs on the rise even in the economic boom that ended with the present recession.

The rising share of low-wage jobs cut across boundaries of race, language, age and education.
