May 27, 1892

The committee in charge of the program for Memorial Day announced today that T.B. Marshall will be grand marshal for the parade which will move promptly at 2 p.m. The program will be held in the skating rink on East Poplar Street. Rev. Dr. S.F. Scovel, president of Wooster College will deliver the oration. All business houses will be closed from 1 to 5 p.m.

100 Years

May 27, 1917

The heavy hailstorm about 6 o’clock last evening completely wrecked the Osborn greenhouse north of Sidney. The heavy hailstones fell in torrents in that vicinity and every glass in the greenhouse was broken. The stock of flowers and plants was also ruined. Osborn estimated his loss this morning at about $2,000. The hail was not so heavy in Sidney and no damage was reported at the Wagner Park Conservatories and Ehrhardt’s greenhouse.

G.H. Dickas, clerk of the board of elections, reports that he has already received registration cards from some men who are traveling. Victor Blake and Dr. Vernon LeMaster were the first in the county to comply with the registration law. Formal registration for all men between the ages of 21 and 31 will take place on June 5 at election precincts in the city.

May 27, 1942

County Auditor Arthur Billing today announced the distribution of personal property taxes for the first half of 1942. The total distribution amounts to $34,428.12, with almost one half of the amount going to schools – $15,276.

Members of the graduating class of Botkins High School left this morning for Detroit, where they will board a steamer for a three-day cruise on the Great Lakes. The 12 members of the class were accompanied by Supt. H.F. Tennant. They were to join pupils from other schools at Detroit for the trip.

May 27, 1967

JACKSON CENTER – Bill Elsass has been announced as the winner of the 1967 DeKalb agricultural accomplishment Award given to the outstanding high school senior in agriculture. To receive this award, he excelled in scholarship, leadership and farming program activities during his four years in high school.

Don Dudek, math teacher and coach of freshman football and golf, has been appointed athletic director at Sidney High School.

His appointment was announced late Thursday afternoon by Roger McGee, speaking for the Sidney board of education. In making the announcement, McGee emphasized that Dudek will continue to teach math. He is a graduate of University of Dayton and will receive his masters degree from there this summer.

With export sales on the rise in recent years, Peerless Machinery Corp. is stepping up its efforts to sell its bakery equipment around the globe.

Peerless President Robert Zielsdorf and other company officials are showing the firm’s products at the International Bakery Association trade show in Berlin, Germany. Zielsdorf also has been invited by Gov. George Voinovich to participate in a two-week trade mission to Southeast Asia in September.

LOS ANGELES – Lawrence Welk, the “wunnerful, wunnerful” champagne music master who struck up his band with “ah-one, an’ ah-two” for a generation of TV viewers, has died at 89.

Welk had pneumonia and died Sunday night at his home in Santa Monica.
