June 15, 1892

The 10-year old talk of drinking fountains around the square ought to result in the erection of the fountains. This paper is in favor of them, but it does not profess to be delighted with drinking river water. In our opinion drinking fountains supplying water from the Burkhart well would be more sensible. It is only 600 feet from the well to the southeast corner of the square. A continual flow of water would have almost its well temperature, which is 46 degrees. Not only would it be purer but cooler.

June 15, 1917

A representative of a large canning factory met with members of the Industrial committee of the Commercial Club yesterday afternoon, relative to securing acreage for a canning factory in Sidney. Members of the committee said that in order to assure locating the factory here it would be necessary to secure the planting of 300 acres in tomatoes during the coming year.

The village of Fort Loramie has filed an injunction suit against C.P. Gross, the First National Bank of New Bremen and Western Ohio Railway Co. to prevent the dismantling and removing the tracks of the Minster and Fort Loramie railroad. A temporary restraining order has been granted pending a hearing on June 23.

June 15, 1942

Taylor Cummins, a well know Sidney attorney, has filed his petitions as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for congressman in the Fourth Congressional district. His petitions were filed in Allen county, the most populous county in the district.

Aylette C. Gant, 67, editor of the Sidney Journal here for the past eight months, succumbed to a sudden heart attack at his home in the Ohio theatre building last evening.

50 Years Ago

June 15, 1967

Mrs. Constance Meyer of R.R. #6, Sidney did not win $400 Tuesday when her name was drawn from the Lucky Barrel at the Famous. She had not registered for the award. The barrel will go to Bunny’s Pharmacy this week with the award now $500.

When the Shelby county jail is renovated the bars at the windows will be covered with two coats of shiny aluminum paint. This feature is provided in plans and specifications on which county commissioners decided Tuesday to ask for bids opening July 11. The complete improvement project will include sandblasting of all stone and brickwork at the jail and sheriff’s living quarters, the cleaning, painting and repairing of the nearby welfare department offices and boiler room and repair of the wall around the jail. About 1150 square feet of wall will be renovated.

June 15, 1992

Frank Zimmerman 80, started building needed items for Hardin Elementary School about three years ago at the request of Principal Sharon Dudek. Since that time he has completed over 50 projects for the school. He is more than satisfied with the letters and cards of thanks from teachers and students, and considers himself paid in full.

Former Sidney Mayor James Humphrey is in Wilson Memorial Hospital recuperating from a slight stroke he suffered Sunday afternoon in a Fremont restaurant where he and his wife Louise had stopped after he a delivered a speech at the dedication of a new veterans facility in Sandusky. Mrs. Humphery said after he suffered the stoke, she said a prayer, got him in the car and drove back to Sidney. He is doing much better now. Humphery was on Sidney City Council for 12 years, having served six years as Mayor. He is retired from Amos Press, Inc. where he was employed for 29 years.
