June 16, 1892

Sidney’s public market, for which an ordinance was passed a month ago, did its first business today. At 7:30 this morning two children, Perry and Florence Develvis, children of Allen Develvis, of Adams township, Champaign county, backed their covered springs wagon against the curbing north of G.F. Yenny’s meat stand, pulled their horse in a livery stable, and at once began selling vegetables and berries. The little people live three miles south of Quincy and had driven nearly 10 miles.

June 16, 1917

According to the total as compiled by G.H. Dickas, clerk of the election board, 2056 persons between the ages of 21 and 31 registered in Shelby county on June 5. Of this number 1,010 indicated no exemptions, with 141 showing occupational exemptions.

The Liberty Bond subscription drive in Sidney and Shelby county this week closed with a rush today the various financial institutions reporting a total of $315,000. Final reports are expected to increase this total somewhat.

June 16, 1942

The final registration for sugar for the first three months of the canning season will close June 18, the local rationing board advised toady. Anyone not registering by that time will have to wait until the fall canning season.

Granville Robinson left last evening for Columbus for his first assignment of duties as temporary inspector for the office of price administration. He will be working out of the headquarters in Cleveland.

Mrs. W.E. Lierman was elected president of the Priscilla club when members met yesterday with Mrs. A.R. Norcross. Mrs. Emory Mumford will serve as secretary-treasurer.

June 16, 1967

New assistant pastor of the Sidney First Methodist Church is Michael Mahoney, replacing Rev. Richard Young. Mahoney, who will be ordained into the Methodist ministry Thursdaynight, is a graduate of Garrett Theological Seminary, Ill., and Albion College, Mich. A native of Toledo, Mahoney will give his first sermon Sunday at the Sidney church.

LAKESIDE, Ohio- Delegates to the Ohio Conference of the Methodist Church ratified Wednesday, by a four to-one vote, a plan to unite with the Evangelical United Brethren denomination. If the plan is adopted a conference would be held April 21 at Dallas, Tex., to bring the United Methodist Church into being. There are about 10.3 million Methodists and 75,000 EUB”s.

Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy Dennis Brown had not planned on attending a program at the Upper Valley Joint Vocational School given by cadets in the law enforcement program. He was baby sitting his grandson. Sheriff Mark Schemmel urged him to attend.. The cadet’s presented him with the award as the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Shelby County. He was honored for his work in the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program which the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department offers to schools in Shelby County.

Construction is progressing on a 225,000 square foot warehouse facility in the Campbell Road Industrial Park in Sidney by Ben-Sar Development Co. of Sidney. The spec. building does not have a tenant and is scheduled for completion in October. The building is on Stolle Drive near Michigan Street.
