Stranded kayakers rescued

Sidney and Lockington firefighters work to rescue a man, center left, and woman center right, who were stranded on an island in the Great Miami River after they fell out of their kayaks. A man living nearby saw one of their kayaks float down stream and then saw them on the island. The man called in the incident at around 1:35 p.m. Sunday, July 2. The island is located around 401 Miami River Rd.. The couple was rescued around 2:30 p.m. they were unhurt. High water from recent rains can be enticing to kayakers but also makes for dangerous conditions. Houston rescue also responded to the scene.
