July 7, 1892

Word was received from Dayton today that a new asylum at that place has been completed, facilities increased and the Shelby country quota has been increased from 31 to 40. Those cases for which it is felt something can be done will be sent to Dayton. The new county asylum will be used to house incurable cases. With 24 cells in the county institution, it will be seldom our quota in the Dayton Institution will be exhausted.

A popular method of suicide now seems to be balloon ascent and a parachute leap.

100 Years

July 7, 1917

M.J. Carr, who has been employed at Russell’s harness store for the past few years, has purchased the Huffer harness and leather store on North Main avenue and assumed charge of the business. Mr. Carr recently spent some time in Akron studying the vulcanizing business at the plant of the Goodrich Co. and will add a vulcanizing plant to his store.

W.R. Carothers, representative from the Sidney Lodge of Elks, and H.A. Amos, district deputy for Northwest, Ohio, will leave tomorrow for Boston, Mass., to attend a meeting of the Grand Lodge. Mrs. Carothers and Mrs. Amos will accompany them.

75 Years

July 7, 1942

Two more of the city’s industries today joined the list of firms with 100 per cent participation by employees in the war bond purchase program. The new additions announced by Jos. B. Cook, war bond chairman, are: The Sidney Paper Box and Novelty Co. and The Evans Johnson Co.

The Sidney public and parochial schools have both lost their head athletic coaches to the armed forces as both Coach Harold Brown of Sidney High school, and Coach Del Drake, of Holy Angels, have enlisted and reported to Patterson Field, Dayton, today, to start training in the air service command. Brown came to Sidney a year ago to take over football and basketball, while Drake has been at Holy Angels for two years, coaching basketball and baseball.

50 Years

July 7, 1967

Minster Mayor Ted Purpus will crown the queen at the annual festival and homecoming here at 9 p.m. Friday, July 21. Purpus, a former resident here and graduate of New Bremen High School, will share the spotlight with the New Bremen Mayor Franklin Dicke. Purpus is a member of the Woodmen of World, sponsor of the festival.

Evangelist Larry Clayton of Cleveland, a native of Shelby county, will speak at 7:30 p.m. nightly from Sunday through Saturday at the Bee-Hive Church, east of Sidney on State Route 47 at Maplewood-Tawawa road. Rev. Clayton has been in the evangelistic ministry for several years.

25 Years

July 7, 1992

The Country Concert is here. The concert starts today and runs until July 10. All the hotels in the area are booked. Jan Seiple of Camp Evergreen reported, “It is like July 4th around here.” Phyllis Schlagetter of the Holiday Inn reported their hotel has been booked for about nine months. The major acts this year include Alan Jackson, Vince Gill, Wynona Judd, Sawyer Brown, George Jones and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Thousands of people are expected to attend.
