July 8, 1892

About 35 young people pleasantly spent last evening at Pleasant Valley, the guests of general proprietor, Charles Benjamin. Pleasant Valley is situated about 2½ miles east of Sidney and under the management of present owner bids fair to become one of the prominent summer resorts for Sidney people.

Further information has been received regarding the State Amateur Baseball League which Sidney has been requested to join. It will require $1,000 to provide for the leasing of grounds for a park, erection of a grandstand, and to provide the necessary equipment for the players.

100 Years

July 8, 1917

The Shel brothers, H.J, C.C. and C.T. have purchased the Star restaurant of S.D. Crumbaugh. They are re-papering, re-painting and are putting in another partition so as to give them three complete dining rooms. They plan to make the place complete and up-to-date in every respect.

Johnston Dickensheets and Garne Woodruff have left to go on the Moneypenny-Hammond company wholesale grocers excursion and spend the week on a trip to Chicago, Detroit and on the lakes.

75 Years

July 8, 1942

A discussion of scouting and patrolling as well as field fortifications was given members of Co. K of the Ohio State Guard by First Lieutenant D.J. Howell, of the U.S. Army at their meeting last evening. Howell is a former Sidney resident. Capt. Frank Marshall said today that there are several vacancies in the company to bring it up to the authorized strength of 50 men.

President Roosevelt summoned members of the Pacific war council to a conference today as news from the battlefields of the works emphasized the difficult tasks facing them.

50 Years

July 8, 1967

Ms. Aleita Alles is one of 40 students selected to spend their junior year of college in Europe under a program sponsored by the 38 member colleges and universities of the Regional Council of International Education. Miss Alles will be living with a German-speaking family in the city of Bassel, Switzerland, located on the Rhine River at the point where France, German and Switzerland meet. A graduate of Anna High School, she is majoring in political science and foreign languages at Ohio Northern University, Ada. Miss Alles is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Alles, 207 Fairview avenue, Anna.

Whatever Manager Dave Bristol says goes and Pete Rose couldn’t have been happier with the latest Cincinnati Reds strategic maneuver. The scrappy Rose, who was added to this year’s National League All-Stars, returned to play second base for the Reds on July 2 and he has continued to bomb opposing pitchers at an amazing clip.

Dr. John Meister, former pastor of the Sidney First Presbyterian Church, has been named executive secretary of the Council on Theological Education for the United Presbyterian Church.

July 8, 1992

There is news in Jackson Center that has the town stirring. The Reverend Thomas Frey, pastor of the Jackson Center Lutheran Church, has been placed on temporary leave. His wife has filed a divorce action against him. An allegation of abuse against her has been denied by the pastor. Pastor Frey will be placed on leave to sort things out.

The Sidney City Schools are embracing total quality management. This management philosophy, first established by Edward Denning, is now widespread in the business community. Connie Donnovan on behalf of the Sidney City Schools obtained a state grant in the amount of $100,000 to establish a TQM program in the Sidney City Schools. She emphasized the program is to involve “improvement of the total system.” Continuous improvement teams have been formed. Teachers with a special involvement in this project include Julie Gilardi, Linda Monroe, and Carol Thompson.
