For some time past the firemen of the Sidney department have anxiously hoped for a day they might get away from duty for a short time and have an enjoyable time among themselves. The chance came when, Isaac Betts, appreciative of the work done by the fire laddies in saving his Valley City Milling Co. recently, furnished six large cakes and an abundance of ice cream.

Seventy-one tickets were sold at the Big Four station to persons accepting the invitation of the Logan County teachers to meet with them at their institution in Bellefontaine today.

100 years ago

Thursday, Aug. 3, 1917

The reason for the late start of the band concert last evening seems to have resulted from the fact that someone stole the trousers of one of the musicians at the new bathing beach while he was out for his evening’s swim. His friends took him home in a truck, where he donned his Sunday best and returned to take his place in the band.

The first 40 men in the list of those drawn for service in Shelby County are under orders to report to the Exemption Board of their headquarters in the petit jury room of the court house on Aug. 7, for physical examinations. Under the new apportionment, Shelby County’s first quota is 141 men, with double that number being called for examination.

75 years ago

Thursday, Aug. 3, 1942

Only two bids were received for the city property offered for sale by the service director yesterday – the property located opposite Graceland cemetery, occupied presently by the Schurr service station. Ray Burke submitted a bid of $1,550, with the other by Frank Schurr for $300.

Robert S. Bertsch, of Sidney, was today named to the six-man committee of hauling scraper manufacturers named by the War Production board.

50 years ago

Thursday, Aug. 3, 1967

Wounded by sniper fire July 23 near Bong Son, South Vietnam, Spec. 4 Richard D. Tidd is undergoing treatment in a hospital in Japan. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tidd, R.R. 1, Botkins, learned that their son was on patrol when a sniper’s bullet struck him in the right knee. He has been in Vietnam since May.

Thursday, Aug. 3, 1992

A new administrator is being sought for Clear Creek Farm due to the pending resignation of Debra L. Sargent. Kent Craver, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Upper Valley Charitable Corp., confirmed that Mrs. Sargent has submitted her resignation. Craver said Mrs. Sargent decided to leave in order to spend more time with her young children and to help her husband with his business.

Saying they realized they would get flack no matter what they decided, Sidney Recreation Board members Monday afternoon forwarded a recommendation to Sidney City Council that motorcyclists be allowed in Tawawa Park. The recommendation is to allow only street-legal motorcycles in the park and to monitor the situation to assure that a “bad element” of cyclists doesn’t get in.
