Tree board plans tree sale

SIDNEY — The Sidney Tree Board met in special session, July 27, to discuss a possible tree sale to Sidney residents.

Mayor Mike Barhorst told the board he recently received information from the Taking Root initiative in Cincinnati about purchasing trees for its Make A Difference Day. Taking Root is a “grassroots campaign” which addresses the region’s loss of trees and helps foster “a sense of stewardship” of trees in communities, according to the Taking Root website. He said when he contacted the supplier, it was suggested that Sidney could create its own sales of trees.

After much discussion, the board unanimously voted in favor of the sale of trees in Sidney.

The sale will be officially announced at the tree board’s regularly scheduled meeting, Aug. 17. It is expected that tree orders will be due by Sept. 15. and trees will be distributed, Oct. 28, at the city’s service center on Vandemark Road.

Trees will be obtained from Woody Warehouse in Indianapolis, which sells containerized, native trees. Red oak, swamp white oak, American beech, Norway spruce, tulip poplar and redbud are the six species that will be available for purchase in 5-gallon containers. They will cost $30 to $40 for a 5-gallon container of 1-inch calipers, 3- to 4-inch small trees and/or 5- to 6-inch medium/tall trees, which includes delivery to Sidney.

Citizens will be required to pay for the trees when ordering. The city of Sidney will not guarantee, deliver or plant the trees. The varieties selected will not be suitable for planting in the city’s right-of-way areas.

The tree board will attempt to involve the Boy Scouts to help plant trees for those who are handicapped or elderly.

Barhorst will create a flier about the sale to be posted in the Municipal Building, city service center, the Spot restaurant, the Amos Memorial Public Library and Sidney Alive’s booth at the Great Sidney Farmer’s Market.
