The eight fire plugs that are to be used around the court square have arrived and will be installed this week. Seven other fire plugs will be put in the outer part of the city where the mains have been extended 3,000 feet.

100 years ago

Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1917

The local exemption board today was advised it will be expected to furnish eight men in the first draft call for Sept. 5. Emerson Deam and Robert Taylor have asked that they be included in the first group to be sent from this county. The board has not decided the basis on which the selections will be made.

75 years ago

Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1942

A unique affair was held last evening when the girls who were members of the graduating classes at Pemberton High School from 1906 through 1910, with their husbands gathered at the home of Mrs. R.D. Leapley, North Dixie highway, for their annual reunion.

Fighting furiously to save Stalingrad, the Russians today were said to have forced the Germans back a mile northwest of the city.

50 years ago

Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1967

Miss Anita Clevenger will be among the cast of 50 Ohio young people and adults appearing at the Ohio state Fair in “It’s Happening – the Youth Scene Today.” Miss Clevenger, a member of the GreenView United Church of Christ and a junior at Fairlawn High School, is the only person from the area in the production.

JACKSON CENTER – Airstream Inc. held their dealer’s showing, Monday, Aug. 21 for 100 dealers east of the Mississippi. Ninety-five dealers and families were present to see the 12 new model lines.

Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1992

Hair Co. beauty salon is doubling its size to expand existing services and add a massage therapist. Construction is underway for an addition at 410 W. Russell Road needed because the beauty salon has outgrown its current shop area said Judy Behr, owner.

Photo: Roger Lentz, vice president of the Anna Board of Education, digs the first shovel of dirt at groundbreaking ceremonies for the new elementary school Thursday evening. The school, which will be built along County 25A, is expected to be completed by January 1994.
