PIQUA — The Upper Valley Career Center Board of Education was updated on the visit by the German exchange students during its meeting on Monday, Sept. 18. Five students and their adviser arrived in Piqua on Friday evening and will depart Oct. 4.

A variety of events have been planned including visits to area businesses, time in labs and a visit to the Air Force Museum. In addition, a special welcome will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday that includes Congressmen Warren Davidson and Jim Jordan.

Dr. Nancy Luce shared dates of upcoming events, including the Cornerstone Restaurant opening for lunch on Oct. 18.

The week of Sept. 11-15, UVCC served as a donation site for the Hurricane Harvey Relief Effort, an initiative led by students.

Luce also reported that she will review the recently released report card at the October board meeting.

Operations director Pat Gibson provided details of the requested van purchase. The 10-passenger van is available through the EPC on a first come, first serve basis. The cost of the van is $28,842 and the original price was $40,198. The van will replace one of the 1999 Dodge vans, which is being retired due to high mileage and the ongoing cost of repairs.

The board approved the purchase order to Bobby Layman Chevrolet in the amount of $28,842.

He also reported that a replacement copier is needed in the Student Transition Center. The cost of the 60-month lease would not exceed $6,600.

The board approved out-of-state travel for instructors from Fort Loramie, Bradford, Covington, Hardin-Houston, Newton, Fairlawn, Jackson Center and main campus to the National FFA Conventions in Indianapolis, Ind., from Oct. 25-28. The combined cost to the district for registration, travel, tours and lodging for all instructors will not exceed $5,500. Each school plans to bring approximately 10 students. The cost to the district to support 15 student qualifiers will not exceed $3,000.

The board accepted several donations, including:

• 65 hamburgers and 65 buns donated by Perkins-Sidney for the Project SEARCH kick off picnic.

• One skid of miscellaneous wire and devices from Area Energy and Electric to be used by the Electrical Trades SkillsUSE program.

The next meeting of the Upper Valley Career Center Board of Education will be held on Monday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Adams Board Room.
