According to a press release from the Sidney Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Sidney firefighters were dispatched on a report of a structure fire at 1499 Riverside Drive. Port Jefferson Fire Department was also requested for mutual aid.

The single-story commercial structure is owned by Ratermann Rentals and is occupied by Meyer Electric, Area Automotive, and Ratermann Custom Homes. Employees of Meyer Electric discovered smoke in the structure when they arrived for work and summoned the fire department.

A fire was discovered in the office area of Area Automotive and was quickly controlled. The area was searched for fire extension. The fire was confined to the office area. Adjacent occupancies received smoke and water damage.

Damage was estimated at $15,000 to the structure and $8,000 to the contents. Firefighters were on the scene for approximately 2 1/2 hours.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Sidney/Shelby County Fire Investigation team and the Shelby County Sheriff’s office.
