TROY — A Sidney man will spend the next four years in prison for his role in the overdose death of a Piqua woman in February.

Darin W. Reineke, 49, of Sidney, was sentenced to serve four years for involuntary manslaughter and corrupting another with drugs. Each four-year sentence will run concurrently with one another.

Miami County Common Pleas Court visiting Judge William Wolff Jr. presided over the sentencing hearing. The victim’s mother spoke in court, noting her daughter, Tabatha A. Murphy, 45, of Piqua, was the mother of five children. The victim’s mother said Reineke used her daughter to obtain money for drugs, spending her disability checks and panhandling, prior to her death.

Reineke apologized to the court.

“I’m very sorry for this whole thing that happened,” he said.

Wolff ordered Reineke to pay Murphy’s mother $1,200 in restitution for funeral costs. Reineke was also ordered to complete five-years mandatory post-release control upon his release from prison. He was given 146 days of jail time credit.

According to Piqua Police Department reports, Reineke provided Murphy with fentanyl-laced heroin, which resulted in her overdose death on Feb. 1.

The Piqua Police Department responded to the 200 block of Manning Street on Feb. 1, at approximately 7 p.m., on a report of a possible physical altercation, and upon arrival, officers found Murphy deceased and cold to the touch with Reineke.

Reineke and Murphy were reportedly living together in the residence. According to court records, multiple syringes and empty gel capsules were in plain view. They were collected as evidence.
