ARCHBOLD — With festive fiddle music and great hands-on activities like old-fashioned games, making homemade butter and ice cream, farm animal demonstrations and more – the Summer on the Farm/Fiddle Contest event on Saturday, July 15, promises to be a memorable day for families at Sauder Village!

“Summer on the Farm continues to be a favorite summer event at Sauder Village,” said Kim Krieger, PR/Media Relations specialist. “As guests get involved with traditional summer activities on the farm they will gain a better understanding of how our ancestors lived while having a lot of fun and creating happy memories at the same time!”

Throughout the day, a number of unique activities will be offered to allow guests to experience life in the past. Children can help hand-crank ice cream, make butter, roll out a pie crust and help pack a wagon for a journey across the swamp! There will be old-fashioned games and competitions for guests to enjoy including croquet, parlor games, sack races, hoop rolling and more! Guests can also try writing with a quill pen, making a wooden bead necklace and young guests will enjoy a horse-themed storytime and craft activity at Little Pioneers Homestead.

Guests can also learn about life on the farm while visiting the Grime and Stuckey barnyard areas. There will be an opportunity to help shell corn, meet the horses and watch as the goat is milked, pigs are fed and the horses get a bath. In addition to the regular horse-drawn buggy rides, guests can also enjoy a ride on a trolley pulled by horses Mike and Max (additional fee for buggy and trolley rides).

Another highlight of this fun-filled day is the annual Fiddle Contest. The Fiddle Contest will begin at 1 p.m. with fiddlers from throughout the region gathering to compete in one of three categories – student, open and senior. Each contestant will have five minutes to perform a hoedown and a waltz using old time style and techniques. Fiddlers will also perform on the Village Green from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and again after the Fiddle Contest. The Bridge County Bluegrass Band will also be sharing their talents throughout the day. Collectively, this group of talented musicians brings over a half century of music experience to the stage. Their performance is sure to be toe-tapping with the driving beat of traditional bluegrass, mournful songs and unforgettable instrumentals. To learn more visit www.bridgecountyband.com
