Deadline for Walmart hunger grants nears

COLUMBUS — The Walmart Foundation will begin accepting grant applications to its State Giving Program, May 8.

Ohio nonprofit organizations can apply for grants between $25,000 and $200,000 to support programs that focus on hunger relief. The deadline to submit grant requests for this cycle is May 12 at 11:59 p.m.

As part of its mission to use its size and scale to help others, the Walmart Foundation will award grants to Ohio organizations that address areas of need among underserved populations. In 2016, Ohio-based charities including Greater Cleveland Foodbank, Meals on Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties, Mobile Meals of Toledo, the Foodbank Inc. in Dayton and Veterans Outreach in Youngstown received a total of $1,200,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation State Giving Program.

“At Walmart, our mission is to create opportunities so people can live better,” said Dann Moore, regional general manager of Walmart in Southern and Northwest Ohio. “In addition to the thousands of community service hours our associates perform and the in-kind donations that are spread throughout the communities we serve, these grants allow us to help local nonprofit organizations fulfill their mission and continue on their path of service.”

Launched in 2008, associate-led State Advisory Councils work with the Walmart Foundation to help identify needs within their states, review grant requests and make funding recommendations to the foundation. Eligible applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status to meet the program’s minimum funding criteria. Grant submissions are only accepted online at http://corporate.walmart.com/_foundation_/apply-for-grants/state-giving-program.

While this cycle is focused on hunger relief, Ohio nonprofits that provide community engagement services, including education, workforce development, health care access and other human services programs as well as hunger relief, are able to apply for a Walmart Foundation State Giving grant during the final grant cycle for 2017. The application window for that cycle is Aug.7-11.
