Sheriff to continue Drug Drop Box program

SIDNEY — In a stance to eliminate access to prescription drugs the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the county’s Drug Drop Box program.

“The grant for this program was discontinued by the state and given the fact our program has been so successful we want to continue the program,” said Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart.

“Given that many opiate abusers start with family medicine cabinets, we want to continue to provide a location where families can safely dispose of their expired, unused, or unwanted pharmaceuticals in a safe, environmentally friendly manner,” he said.

The Drug Drop Box is still located in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office and is open 24/7. Anyone with a large amount of drugs to drop off should ask for Chief Jim Frye or Lt. Cori Steiner and they will come out and take the drugs for you instead of placing them in the drop box. Please do not place any liquids or needles in the box.

“We thank the public for their continued support of this program, as we have collected thousands of pounds of medication that will no longer be available to or for someone to take,” said Lenhart.
