Driver arrested after train hits his vehicle

SIDNEY — A Logan County man was arrested after his vehicle was struck by a train in the 6500 block of Johnson-Slagel Road at 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kirby Ray Stahler, 34, of DeGraff, for driving under influence. He told the deputies he was attempting to avoid a deer when his vehicle became disabled on the railroad tracks. His vehicle was hit by a CSX train moments later.

The train dragged the vehicle around half mile. Stahler was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The railroad crossing was closed for approximately three hours. It reopened around 2:35 a.m. Sunday.

Perry-Port-Salem Rescue and Port Jefferson Fire Department also responded to the accident scene.

Stahler is scheduled to appear in Sidney Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Monday, July 27.
