Russia BOE approves transportation costs

RUSSIA — A one-year agreement for transportation for preschool students was approved during the Wednesday, April 19, Russia Local Schools Board of Education meeting.

The agreement states Shelby Hills School will provide transportation to preschool students who do not have transportation written into their IEP. The amount of the contract is not to exceed $11,300 for the 2017-18 school year.

According to Superintendent Steve Rose, Shelby Hills is cutting its preschool transportation and districts will be billed to have the service continue.

The board approved a contract with Carol Riggle, who is a contracted services individual, to compile the financial statements which will be filed according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Her contract is for $4,500.

In other business, the board learned:

• The district is seeking a K-12 guidance counselor, cafeteria cook and one to one aide. Applicants should apply to contact [email protected] to apply.

• Reviewed the financial summary report, the updated spending plan, and the three year spending plan comparison.

• Approved a motion to employ Amy Pleiman, Edward Sharp and James Mikolajewski as substitute teachers at a rate of $85 per day for the 2016-17 school year on an as-needed basis.

• Approved a motion to employ Lynn Blakeley as elementary music teacher for the 2017-18 school year.

• Approved a motion to approve the non-renewal of contracts for non-certificated personnel as submitted effective at the end of the 2016-17 school year. This is an annual procedure taken by the board.

• Employed Aaron Watkins as varsity volleyball coach at an annual salary of $2,998 for the 2017-18 school year.

• Employed Doug Foster as high school cross country coach at an annual salary of $5,131 for the 2017-18 school year.

• Accepted the resignation of Tonya Slonaker as K-12 guidance counselor effective at the end of the 2016-17 contract year.

• Accepted the resignation of Sara Neargarder as an instructional aide effective at the end of the 2016-17 contract year.

• Set a public hearing for Russia Local School to discuss the use of Federal IDEA and Title I funds on May 17, 2017, at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the presentation of the intended use of the funds and will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed district plan. • Approved overnight field trips: Grade 5 – Soap Box Derby – Akron, (May 19-20, 2017); Grades 5 and 6 – Camp Willson – Bellefontaine (Sept. 14-15, 2017); and Grade 8 – Washington, D.C. – (Oct.17-22,2017).

• Approved the NEOLA Policies as submitted at the March meeting.

• Approved the purchase of Apple Computers to be used in Gayette Booher’s computer lab.

• Accepted a donation of $4,000 from Cargill Inc. to be used to purchase Chromebooks.

• Accepted a donation of $1,500 from the Russia Homecoming Festival to be used for technology supplies.

• Accepted an anonymous donation of $350 to be used for the Washington, D.C. trip.

• Accepted a donation of $130 from the fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball program to be used for the high school girls basketball program.

• Heard from Principal Brian Hogan about the testing as it is progressing. He also updated the board on several upcoming activities including prom, Get Real Week, as well as an assembly on weather for grades 2-6.
