BOE reviews school counseling framework

SIDNEY — A resolution for a new Sidney City Schools counseling framework was introduced during Monday night’s Board of Education meeting.

Brooke Gessler, director of curriculum, the framework includes standards which speak to the comprehensive plan for the district.

“It sheds new light on what the comprehensive plan is,” said Gessler. “We used the two-hour early releases to create the plan.”

The counseling framework would apply to all counselors in the district for kindergarten through 12th grade.

“This (framework) will bring us current and shows what we do in the district,” said Gessler.

The resolution will be back on the agenda for the July meeting.

In other business, the board:

• Approved temporary appropriations for fiscal year 2018 in the amount of 25 percent of the fiscal year 2017 appropriations.

• Amended appropriation increases for general fund, retirement and benefits, $125,000; general fund, purchase services, $350,000; general fund, supplies, $150,000; termination benefits fund, $65,000;and IDEA – Part B, $125,000.

• Approved the transfer of the balance of the OHSAA tournament fund to the stadium facilities fund; and transferred $65,000 from the general fund to the termination benefit fund for retirement severance payments.

• Approved the breakfast prices for the 2017-18 school year. Grades kindergarten through fifth will be $1 each and grades 6-12 will be $1.50. These prices are the same as the 2016-17 school year.

• Approved the resignations of Ruth Baker, Sidney High School science teacher; and Carroll cutler, substitute teacher.

• Employed Christa Morris on a one-year limited, as needed contract as a substitute aide at $11.01 per hour effective May 4.

• Approved supplemental contracts of five extended days for the high school counselors. One counselor will be working each day in July so every day is covered in case a student or parent has a question. Those receiving the contracts were Molly Hirtzinger, $214.90 per day; Erin Montgomery, $325.30 per day; and Katherine Bourelle, $214.90 per day.

• Awarded one-year limited certified contracts to Erin Koesters, speech pathologist, $53.721; Carrie Sigler, science teacher, $69,499; and Jenny VanMatre, full-time floating substitute, $40,938.

• Awarded one-year limited classified contracts to Tegan Knasel, custodian, $15.10 per hour; Travis Davidson,specialty trade maintenance, $31.04 per hour effective July 3, and authorizing work performed from June 19 to June 30 to e paid at $30.14 per hour; Bob Barnes, aide, $12.59 per hour; Peggy Bean, aide, $12.59 per hour plus $2 per hour low incident pay; Galen Cathcart, aide, $13.50 per hour; Amanda Stout, aide, $12.59 per hour plus $2perhour low incident pay; April Bogart, cook, $10.85 per hour; Marie Masteller, cook, $10.85 per hour;and Leah Stagno, cook, $10.85 per hour.

• Approved a change of assignment for Ashley Hamilton who will transfer from aide to secretary at $16.43 per hour.

• Employed Erika Brux as a substitute custodian at $13.59 per hour.

• Approved one-year limited supplemental contracts for Josh Montgomery, assistant athletic director, $3,381; and Stacey Goffena, assistant athletic director, $3,381.

•Approved one-year limited supplemental contracts for extended service for Holly Hitzinger, SHS counselor, 15 days, $3,503; Erin Montgomery, SHS counselor, 15 days, $5,209; Katherine Bourelle, SHS counselor, 15 days, $3,503; Stephanie Davis, RCI instructor, 20 days, $7,148; Sharon Maurice, WFA instructor, 20 days, $6,417; Tammi Johnson, SHS library aide, 7 days, $752; Linda Carpenter, SHS marketing education,10 days, $3,655; and Michael Ward, SHS vocational agriculture, 20 days, $5,970.

• Approved one-year limited supplemental contracts for ELL summer cap for Donna Jones, teacher, $26 per hour; and Judith Shepherd, aide, $12.23 per hour.

• Approved one-year limited supplemental contracts for third-grade AIR testing for teachers Kay Straman and Michelle Angell, $26 per hour; and aides Judith Shepherd and Morgan Headings, $12.23 per hour.

• Employed Larry Hoel for seasonal work on an as-needed contract at $14.74 per hour from July 1 to Sept. 30.

• Employed Jennifer Ferree and Zane Walker as student workers for the summer season of May 30 to Aug. 18 on an as-needed contract at $8.15 per hour.

•Adopted revised board policies for gifted education and identification and employment contract.

• Approved membership in the Ohio High school Athletic Association for Sidney Middle School and Sidney High School.

• Approved the Title 1 parent involvement policies and school-parent compacts for Whittier, Northwood, Emerson and Longfellow elementary schools.

• Approved the principal recommended changes to the elementary, SMS, SHS and Sidney Alternative School student handbooks for the 2017-18 school year.

• Approved the purchase of science and social studies textbooks and middle school novels from publishers Pearson, $176,852.99; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $80,952.15; and McGraw Hill, $17,753.51.

• Approved Austin James Henley and Brittany Eary for graduation with the Class of 2017 from Sidney High School.

The board’s next meeting will be Monday, July 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the board of education office.
