Energy bike to be used in Russia lessons

RUSSIA — A new bicycle was presented to Russia Local Schools during the Board of Education meeting June 22.

Teachers Jenn Wysocki and Cheryl Scott were present along with three sixth-grade girls, who recently attended a conference in Beavercreek to build an energy bike. Carley Scott, Laci Phlipot and Kayli McClenen demonstrated the bike to the board. The energy bike is part of the conference and is now owned by the school to be used for future educational lessons.

The board approved temporary appropriations for fiscal year 2018 at $1,800,000.

They also approved appropriation modifications due to changes in estimated revenue certified by the Shelby County Auditor.

Modifications included College Credit Plus (466-9016), increasedby $1,290; College Credit Plus (466-9017), decreased by $16,500; Title 1 (572-9017) decreased by $121.11; REAP (599-9017),decrease by $3,496.34; Chemistry Grant (001-5100), increase by $1,498; Emerson Grant (001-0051), increase by $438.87.

A motion was also passed to approve any additional appropriation modifications as become necessary to close out the fiscal year. These modifications will be reviewed by the superintendent.

A resolution providing for the issuance of not to exceed $2,210,000 school improvement refunding bonds was approved by the board.

Superintendent Steve Rose updated the board on staffing for the upcoming 2017-18 school year. He also discussed the summer maintenance projects.

Rose addressed the board regarding a potential for entering into a transportation contract with the MRESC for the lease of a school bus for transporting students to a special education unit. Discussions as ongoing and the decision will be made as more information becomes available.

In other business, the board:

• Employed Jayme Goubeaux on a one-year limited teaching contract as fifth-grade ELA/social studies teacher at an annual salary of $56,369 for the 2017-18 school year.

• Employed Kathy Bevans and Ashley Borchers as summer school teachers at a rate of $20 per hour for the 2016-17 school year.

• Employed Eric Sullenberger, Shelby Pitsenbarger and Jana Salisbury as summer ACT teachers at a rate to be determined based on number of participants.

• Employed Angie Monnin as a substitute summer school teacher at a rate of $20 per hour on an as needed basis.

• Employed Cathy Courter as a one-to-one aide at an annual salary of $17,340.62 for the 2017-18 school year.

• Employed Mick Leffel as summer boys basketball camp coordinator at a salary of $625.

• Approved Angie Baldridge as volunteer volleyball coach for the 2017-18 school year.

• Approved Virgil Fullenkamp as volunteer golf coach for the 2017-18 school year.

• Approved Dan Lachat as volunteer bowling coach for the 2017-18 school year.

• Approved Diane Magoto at a revised Librarian salary of $13.81 per hour for the 2017-18 school year.

• Employed Mark Travis as junior high cross country coach for the 2017-18 school year.

• Approved bus drivers for the 2017-18 school year: Dale Alt, Jerry Barhorst, Paul Bremigan, Rodney Counts, Terry Daugherty, Tom Gariety, Carrie Heuing, Gery Heuing, Angie Lachat, Mike Meyer, Dan Millhouse, Larry Platfoot, Steve Rose, Vern Seger and Joseph Thomas.

• Accepted the resignation of Angie Petty as part-time custodian effective Aug. 1, 2017.

• Approved membership into the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 2017-18 school year.

• Set the hourly pay rate for tutors and IAT team members at $22 per hour for the 2017-18 school year.

• Set the substitute teacher salary rate at $90 per day for the 2017-18 school year.

• Employed certificated staff for coaching/supplemental positions for the 2017-18 school year: Gay Booher, yearbook extended hours; Shannon Langston, student council; Michelle Muhlenkamp,varsity girls softball; Bart Doseck, co-Power of the Pen; Cierra York, co-Power of the Pen; Penny Elmore, FCCLA adviser; Mike Hart, athletic site coordinator; Andrea Raterman, FTA adviser; Jana Salisbury, Academia adviser, prom adviser; Chad Topp, NHS adviser; Marcus Petitjean, Lego Robotics; Eric Sullenberger, Lego Robotics, high school Science Olympiad adviser; Eric Sullenberger, junior high Science Olympiad adviser; Rachel Gregg, guidance extended service; Michael Fulk, music extended service; Andy Timmerman, varsity girls basketball; and Cierra York, junior varsity girls basketball.

• Approved a contract for health services between the Sidney-Shelby County Board of Health and Russia Local School for the 2017-18 school year.

• Waives the 45-day waiting period for the CRA Industrial Agreement for Russia Inn.

• Employed non-certificated supplemental contracts as submitted for the 2017-18 school year: Doug Foster, high school boys/girls cross country; Kyle Moore, high school boys/girls cross country; Rebecca Meyer, junior high cross country; Mark Travis, junior high cross country; Terry Daugherty, varsity and junior varsity boys golf; Aaron Watkins, varsity volleyball; Bethany York, assistant varsity volleyball; Janel Cantwil, junior varsity volleyball; Allison Watkins, junior high volleyball; Brandi Phlipot, high school cheer; Mark Hoying, seventh-grade girls basketball; Tonya Hammonds, eighth-grade girls basketball; Phil Pleiman, seventh-grade boys basketball; Adam York, eighth-grade boys basketball; Bruce Borchers, assistant varsity girls basketball; Spencer Cordonnier, varsity boys basketball; Mick Leffel, assistant varsity boys basketball; Dave Borchers, junior varsity boys basketball; Kyle Schafer, freshmen boys basketball; and Mike Meyer, assistant band director.

• Accepted a $1,000 donation from the family of Dr. Yang Guu Chen to be used for scholarship purposes.

• Accepted a donation of $400 from the Russia Student Council to be used for scholarship purposes.

• Accepted a $1,000 donation from the Russia Music Boosters to be used for scholarship purposes.

• Learned about the summer reading program for elementary school students which will run from June 27 to july 27.

• Received the preliminary results of the third-grade reading tests.

The July board meeting is scheduled for July 27 starting at 6:30 p.m.
