PIQUA — A calamity day alternative make-up plan was adopted during the Upper Valley Career Center Board of Education meeting Monday night
The resolution approves a plan for make-up of calamity days where academic and career-technical teachers develop a sufficient number of lessons for each course taught by that teacher with such lessons requiring, in the judgment of the teacher, an amount of time equal to or greater than the number of hours that are the equivalent of three school days in such teacher’s class.
The teacher will then designate the order in which the lessons are to be posted on the district’s web portal or website. Teachers will update or replace such lessons as necessary throughout the school year based on the instructional progress of students.
Each student enrolled in a course for which a lesson is posted will then be granted a two-week period from the date of posting to complete the lesson. If the student does not complete the lesson within this time period, the student will receive an incomplete or failing grade unless a reason sufficient to the teacher is provided.
The resolution says that students without access to a computer shall be permitted to complete the posted lessons at school after the reopening of school. Students utilizing this option will be granted two weeks from the date of reopening to complete such lessons, with the same rules applying.
During the meeting, Dr. Nancy Luce, superintendent, also updated the board of a variety of events related to the career center.
First, Luce reflected on the recent passing of Dr. Barbara Wagner, retired adult director for UVCC.
Luce then honored four board members for their milestone service to the district, including: Lee Harmon (5 years), Bob Luby (5 years), Joyce Reives (5 years) and Doug Trostle (15 years).
She also shared a resolution from Ohio Rep. Stephen Huffman recognizing the Upper Valley Career Center’s designation as a National-SkillsUSA Chapter of Excellence Nationally, relaying that only 24 chapters receive this honor.
During the meeting, Luce also shared a list of upcoming dates for the beginning of the school year at UVCC, including:
• Aug. 8 — New staff orientation
• Aug. 15 — Staff return
• Aug. 16 — Schedule pick-up day
• Aug. 17 — Staff breakfast
• Aug. 18 — New students’ first day
• Aug. 21 — All students’ first day
During the meeting, the board approved the Hartstein/Favorite International Vocational Fund grant in the amount of $11,700 to be used for expenses for the German Apprentice Exchange Program. They also accepted a donation of 4,000 pounds of carbon steel, aluminum and brass, donated, by Haas, to be used for the Manufacturing and Machining Technologies program.
The board also approved a number of textbooks and work boooks for the Computer Information Technologies, Exercise Science and the new Veterinary Science program.
