SIDNEY — Several funds administered by the Community Foundation of Shelby County recently awarded scholarships.

Owen Michael, a recent Anna High School graduate, was chosen to receive the Harry and Mary Bennett Scholarship of $350. Michael is an animal science major at Kansas State University. He is the son of Scott and Beth Michael, of Sidney.

The Harry and Mary Bennett Scholarship was established by a bequest from Ruth Bennett Emmons in memory of her parents. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Shelby County high school senior planning to pursue an agriculture-related major.

Caitlyn Millhouse, daughter of Richard and Christy Millhouse, of Anna, received the $1,000 Irene Palko Scholarship. She is majoring in early childhood education at the Ohio State University campus in Newark.

The Irene Palko Scholarship was established by Daniel and Nita Watercutter, of Minster, in honor of the positive life-long impact of his first- and second-grade teacher. Palko taught elementary school in McCartyville and several other locations before being a principal in Indiana through the Sisters of the Precious Blood Convent. She resigned that position to finish her career as a teacher at Anna Elementary School. She instilled a “can-do” attitude in her students. New in 2017, the scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from Anna High School who plans to major in education.

Three Houston High School 2017 graduates have been awarded Mary E. Patterson Scholarships from the Hardin Houston Local School Foundation. Each student received a $1,000 award.

Jenna Jarrett is enrolled at Edison State Community College with a major in criminal justice. She is the daughter of Beckie Leonard.

Audrey Kittel, the daughter of Kevin Kittel, plans to study nursing at the Lake Campus of Wright State University.

Devyn Ostrander is an industrial and systems engineering major at Wright State University. He is the son of Tara and Gavin McDermit.

The scholarship fund was established from the estate of former Piqua City Schools teacher, Mary Patterson, whose roots trace back to the Houston area.

Online applications are available through The Community Foundation website at www.commfoun.com beginning in mid-December each year.
