SHS cafeteria gets a facelift

SIDNEY– Sidney High School students were welcomed back to lunch time in style this year as the SHS cafeteria received a facelift over the summer. The new look comes compliments of food services funds. Featuring the Sidney stinger S logo in the middle of the floor and black and yellow paint throughout, the new cafeteria embodies school spirit.

“The cafeteria, when it was built and after it was expanded, featured a variety of colors other than the school colors,” said Jason McLain, food services and operations director. “It was nice to be able to use money earned through food services to replace the flooring and paint the walls and give it a Sidney theme.”

The food services fund is completely separate from the district’s general fund. By operating smartly within the food services department throughout the district, the food services fund had a surplus. The district’s food services department was able to earn money buy using commodity money given to it through its food program. The district is allocated so much commodity money to purchase specific food items including produce. By using all of the commodity money, the district was able to increase food service revenue compared to previous years, and therefore use the surplus money to complete this improvement project without using any money from the general fund.

Continental Contractors completed the entire job for a total cost of $46,800. Much of the time spent completing the project was donated, as the material costs were higher due to the use of solid colors.

“Continental Contractors did a great job capturing the Sidney pride,” said McLain. “The district appreciates the work they did to make this cafeteria a showcase.”
