SIDNEY — For Jessica Fortkamp, philanthropy isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life. As the donor relations director of the Community Foundation of Shelby County, she assists local families who want to provide for many charitable groups and causes by establishing charitable funds that issue grants.

She and her husband Doug recently established the Doug and Jessica Fortkamp Family Foundation, a donor advised charitable fund, within the Community Foundation.

“We liked the concept of how a donor advised fund works,” said Doug Fortkamp. “It is a simplified way to do our charitable giving and by being able to invest the fund, we hope to increase our philanthropic endeavors.”

A donor advised fund enables individuals, couples and families to make a gift to the Community Foundation to create the fund and then use part of the gift or earnings to disburse grants to their favorite charities. It allows the family to stay involved with the fund’s investment and granting.

“Doing our part of supporting the community is important to us,” said Jessica. “We have been blessed in our lives and want to provide opportunities for others.”

As time goes on, the Fortkamps can request grants to an ever-changing list of organizations. They intend for the fund to be available for their daughters to continue issuing grants in their name.

“We hope that in the future this fund will continue to support our favorite charities after we are gone and, in turn, maybe inspire someone else to set up a fund to do the same thing,” added Doug. “We like the idea of the gift that keeps on giving.”
