Sidney out after qualifying round

COLUMBUS — All Sidney head bowling coach Trent Knoop could say Friday was “that’s bowling sometimes.”

His Yellow Jacket boys team was competing in the Division 1 state tournament for the first time ever, and even though the Jackets were unable to make it to the matchup round, Knoop thought they bowled well.

“Honestly, I thought we bowled as well as anyone there,” he said. “But other teams were able to score and we weren’t. We kept hitting the pocket. We just couldn’t knock all the pins down and we left ourselves some tough spares.”

Unofficially, the Yellow Jackets placed 12th in the qualifying round, and only the top eight teams advanced to the final round.

Junior Josh Abbott, bowling in the state tournament for the second year in a row, led Sidney’s bowlers with a 644 series, which was good enough for 27th place overall. Ironically, his sderies was 16 pins beter than last season, when he finished sixth overall.

Teammate Austin Simon added a 618 series.

There will be more on the tournament in Monday’s edition.
