XENIA — Sidney Post 217’s American Legion baseball team played its first game in the Best of Ohio Showcase Thursday afternoon at Athletes in Action in Xenia.

The result was a good one, with Post 217 blanking Miami Valley Prospects 3-0 to advance to second-round games today at 1:30 and 6 p.m. to see if they can advance to the championship round on Saturday.

Against Miami Valley, Braden Goodwin was superb on the mound, allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking two.

Sidney, which had nine hits, scored three in the top of the third. Catcher Kyle Subler doubled and moved up on a wild pitch. He then scored on a single by Dakota Bollinger. Cole Proffitt and Owen Leugers followed with singles, and after a walk to Drew Wehrman, Kyle Noble singled in the final run of the game.

Proffitt finished 3-for-4 to lead Post 217, and Jace Barga had two hits in three trips.

Goodwin allowed harmless singles in the second, fifth and sixth innings.

“He only struck out four but was in command of his pitches,” said Sidney coach Jim Koewler. “He let his defense make the plays behind him.

Wednesday

Sidney hosted Greenville in a league game on Wednesday and came away with a 7-5 victory.

Jacob Peters and Erik Neeley handled the pitching duties for Post 217, and they allowed just five hits while striking out five and walking three. Shaky defense kept it close as Post 217 committed five errors.

Greenville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Sidney came right back with three in the bottom of the inning. Barga walked to lead off and Bollinger reached on an error by the pitcher. Then after Proffitt hit into a fielder’s choice, Leugers put a charge into one and sent it well over the fence in left for a three-run homer.

Sidney added another run in the second, by the book, as Dan Borchers singled, was sacrificed to second, and scored on a base hit by Subler.

Sidney then added three more in the third on hits by Proffitt, Wehrman and Bryant McCarty around Leugers getting hit by a pitch.

That made it 7-2 but Greenville made it 7-4 in the eighth, taking advangtage of two Sidney errors. The visitors added another run in the ninth.

“Our big downfall was our errors,” said Koewler. “We need to cut down on those. Owen Leugers’ home run in the first was a big lift because it brought us from two runs down. Jacob (Peters) settled in and pitched a good game, and Erik Neeley closed it out in the ninth.”
