SIDNEY — Despite threatening weather and a bit of rain Tuesday, the Lehman Lady Cavaliers got their Division 4 Sectional softball game in, and it paid off.
The Lady Cavs, after scoring 31 runs and getting 37 hits in a doubleheader win over Mississinawa Saturday, managed just three runs and five hits on Tuesday. But it was enough thanks to good pitching and outstanding defense in a 3-0 blanking of visiting Tri-Village in first-round play.
Lehman goes to 12-9 on the year and gets top-seeded Covington next on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Covington.
Hailey Wick pitched a one-hitter with just one strikeout, meaning Tri-Village put the ball in play.
“We really played good defense,” said Lehman head coach Bill Booth. “Maddy McFarland did a great job in left field. She caught one ball against the fence and made a couple other great catches.”
Lehman took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brogan McIver singled and stole second, moved up on a ground out, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Grace Monnin.
It stayed that way until the third inning, when the Lady Cavs added two more runs.
After an out, Monnin walked and rode a wild pitch to second. She came around to score on a double by Sidney Chapman, and Chapman scored when Allie Hall singled to make it 3-0.
Chapman had two doubles in the game and Hall two singles.
