County teams advance to finals

SIDNEY — Lehman catcher Max Schutt made the Botkins Trojans pay for intentionally walking the batter ahead of him in the third inning, and it spurred Lehman to a 10-3 win in Division 4 Sectional semifinal play at Lehman Wednesday.

The Cavaliers, who lost to Triad on Tuesday, are now 19-3 on the year and are at Hardin Northern Saturday in a makeup conference game.

“It was a tough game,” said Lehman coach Dave King. “We made a big defensive play in the third inning and that seemed to spark us. They have the bases loaded with one out and tried a suicide squeeze, but (pitcher) Parker Riley got to the ball and flipped it to Max (Schutt) for a forceout. Then we got the final out and kept them off the board.”

In the bottom of the third, Brandon Barhorst singled and stole second, and after an out, Botkins chose to intentionally walk hot-hitting Nate Bosway. But Schutt spoiled the move by belting a three-run homer to left for a 3-0 lead. Dylan Arnold then followed with a solo homer.

The Cavs then added four more runs on three hits in the fourth.

Riley and Bosway combined on a four-hitter, with nine strikeouts and four walks.

Schutt was 3 for 3 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and four RBIs for the Cavs. Barhorst had three hits and scored twice, Stephen Monnin had two doubles and drove in two, and Arnold had two hits, scored twice and drove in two.

The Redskins are now 16-9 on the season and will play in the sectional finals next Wednesday against either No. 2 seed Triad or No. 7 seed Covington at a site to be determined.

Loramie coach Bill Sturwold was “captain hook” Wednesday, bringing Drew Wehrman on in the second inning. And Wehrman responded by blanking the Indians the rest of the way.

Loamie got big hits in their scoring frames from Jacob Kitzmiller and Brad Pleiman. Kitzmiller finished 2 for 3 with a double and Pleiman was 3 for 3.

“They both came through for us with big hits,” Sturwold said. “And Drew, he’s our leader, and he came in and shut them down.”
