Botkins tops Riverside

DEGRAFF — The Botkins boys went on the road Tuesday night and came away with a hard-fought 56-49 victory over the Riverside Pirates in non-league basketball action.

The win puts the Trojans at 4-8 on the season with Fairlawn coming to town Friday night in County action.

Riverside, meanwhile, dips to 2-8 and is at Lehman Friday.

Riverside jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one quarter, but the Trojans outscored the Pirates 20-9 in the second period to take a 30-26 lead. However, Riverside came back in the third quarter and cut the lead to one with eight minutes to play.

The Trojans then survived some shaky free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

They hit just 7-for-15 from the line in the final period, but for the game were 22 for 31.

Luke Bergman continued his prolific scoring, finishing with 25 points and hitting 10 of 12 free throw attempts. Ethan Butcher added 10 and Alex Bergman nine.

For Riverside, Trey Helmlinger finished with 16 points and four assists, and Hank Harshbarger added 10 points.

“This one was tough,” said Riverside coach Seth Bodenmiller. “I think the biggest difference in the game was free throws. Botkins had 22 to our nine.”
