MINSTER — The Minster Lady Wildcats used a huge second quarter to build up a big lead, then held on down the stretch to defeat Fort Recovery 48-42 and clinch an outright Midwest Athletic Conference basketball championship in the regular-season finale Thursday night at Minster.

The win gave the Lady Wildcats a final league record of 9-0 and has them at 20-2 heading into tournament play. They will be in action Feb. 25 against the Ada-Hardin Northern winner at Lima Bath.

Going into Thursday’s game, Minster had already clinched a share of the MAC title, but Versailles was just one game back. So a win by Recovery would have resulted in a tie for the title.

Minster trailed early, falling behind 16-10 when Recovery scored the first basket of the second quarter. But from there, the Lady Wildcats used pressure to force the Lady Indians into numerous turnovers, and it resulted in a 23-3 run to end the half and give Minster a 33-19 bulge.

When the Lady Wildcats scored the first three points of the third quarter, the lead ballooned to 17 at 36-19. But just as Minster had done in the second quarter, Recovery did in the third, forcing the Lady Wildcats to turn the ball over, and getting back in the game in the process.

Recovery outscored Minster 9-2 from that point to the end of the quarter to cut the lead down to 10 at 38-28, then pulled within seven at 41-34.

Alli Fischer drained her only three of the game at that point for a huge bucket, but Recovery battled back within five before running out of time.

Minster had no one in double figures, but Taylor Kogge and Courtney Prenger had nine each and Hayley Baumer eight.
